Two Types of Tooth Extraction
Types of Tooth Extraction in Las Vegas, NVA tooth extraction may be performed for a variety of reasons, including decay, periodontal infection, or as part of an orthodontic treatment. Dr. Thomas Kintonis in Las Vegas, NV perform two types of tooth extractions for patients whose teeth cannot be saved and offer tooth replacement options to replace missing teeth in adults.
- Simple Extraction: In a simple extraction, we will administer anesthetic to numb the treatment area and use forceps to gently rock the tooth back and forth. After loosening the tooth, it will be removed with the forceps. A blood clot will form in the socket and we will have you bite down on a small piece of gauze until the bleeding subsides.
- Surgical Extraction: A surgical tooth extraction is performed on teeth that are not accessible above the gum line, such as a broken tooth or an impacted wisdom tooth, or teeth that must be sectioned in order to be removed. We will anesthetize the area around the tooth with local anesthetic. However, with more difficult extractions, general anesthesia may be recommended. Incisions will then be made into the gum tissue, and possibly bone, to reveal the tooth and subsequently remove it. The incisions for missing teeth in adults are closed with sutures.
What to Expect After a Tooth Extraction?
There may be some swelling and discomfort for the first 24 hours. Ice packs may be applied for ten minutes at a time. It is important to continue brushing, but avoid brushing the treatment area. We may give you a special dental rinse or recommend a salt water rinse while the site heals. A soft food diet is recommended for the first few days. You will also be advised to avoid drinking from a straw, so as not to dislodge the blood clot.
